There will be a private family funeral service on Saturday, February 5, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. Harlan De Jong will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Eugene Jason was born on August 6, 1922, in rural Maurice, one of three sons born to George and Agnes (Borgman) Vande Brake. He was raised on his family’s farm north of Maurice and attended a nearby country school. In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served on a patrol craft for three years in the Pacific. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Northwest Iowa.

On April 25, 1947, “Gene” married Jennie Langstraat in Orange City. They made their home and raised their family on the Vande Brake farm, where in addition to raising crops, they operated a repair shop. Jennie passed away on November 18, 2009, at their home, after more than 62 years of marriage. For the past several years, Gene lived at Kosgrove Estate in Sioux Center.

Mr. Vande Brake was a long-time member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City. He enjoyed working on anything mechanical, particularly antique tractors, and was an avid reader.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Kenneth and Rose Vande Brake, of Alton; two daughters, Jolene De Boer, of Ireton; and Carol, and her husband, Randy Brown, of Elizabethton, Tennessee; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers and their wives, Merle and Edna Vande Brake and Duane and Harriet Vande Brake; and Jennie’s eight siblings and their spouses.

Memorials will be given to the Midwest Honor Flight and the Sioux City Gospel Mission.
