From the Alton Democrat, June 7, 1940, Ireton news:

Word was received here of the death of Earl Bartlett of Centerville, S.D., former Ireton resident at a Wakonda hospital early Sunday. Deceased had recently submitted to an operation for ulcers of the stomach. According to the message received here, funeral services were to be held Wednesday at Wakonda and burial was to be made there also as far as was known here.

Deceased is survived by his wife and nine children and the following brothers and sisters: Floyd Bartlett of LeMars, Alvin of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Robert Melton of Alton and Mrs. Lena Kroep of Norfolk, Neb.

Mr. Bartlett was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Newt Bartlett now deceased, pioneers of this section and spent his boyhood in this community. He was united in marriage to Anna Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Johnson of Craig, who survives him. The family moved to South Dakota some seven years ago and have made their home in the Centerville vicinity since that time.

Earl Bartlett Died Sunday

Earl Bartlett of Centerville died Sunday evening in a Sioux Falls hospital where he had undergone an operation for ruptured ulcers a few days previously. Funeral services were held at Centerville at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon. He leaves a widow and eight children. Earl was well known here where he grew up and for many years lived in Ireton and vicinity. He has many friends here who were shocked to learn of his death. He was a man of middle age and the wife, children, brothers and sisters have the sympathy of all.

The South Dakota Death Index has Earl Bartlett, died 2 June 1940 in Minnehaha County, South Dakota.

His FindaGrave.com page has Earl Charles Bartlett, born 25 Aug 1897 in Ireton, died 2 June 1940 in Minnehaha County, S.D., buried in Riverview Cemetery, Centerville, Turner County, S.D. Wife Anna Sophia Johnson Bartlett (1895-1978, married 1915). Eight children listed: Vernon E. Bartlett (1916-2005), Leona Pearl Bartlett (1918-1928), Eva Lorraine Bartlett Kuck (1921-2006), Virgil E. Bartlett (1923-2006), Marels L. Bartlett (1927-1997), Donald Lloyd Bartlett (1929-2001), Ronald Dale Bartlett (1931-2011), and James W. Bartlett (1934-2009).

The 1920 U.S. census for Ireton shows Earl C. (23) and Anna (24) Bartlett with children Vernon (3) and Leona (1-2/12) and sister-in-law Lena Johnson (20); he is working as a “common laborer.” In 1930 the family is still in Ireton, where he is owner and chauffeur of a truck company. In 1940 they live in Centerville, Turner County, S.D., where he is a laborer at a gravel pit; they had lived in Sioux County in 1935.

The 1925 Iowa state census shows his parents as Nuit C. Bartlett and Liddy Wright.

His World Ear I draft registration card (June 1918) has Earl Charles Bartlett, age 21, born August 25, 1896 in Ireton; father’s birthplace LaPorte, Iowa; working for James Coad of Ireton; nearest relative Annie Bartlett, Ireton; medium height and build, grey eyes, light brown hair.
