From the Hawarden Independent, September 8, 1932, Ireton and Vicinity news:

Death of Pioneer Lady

Mrs. Lynden[i.e., Lydia] Ann Wright Bartlett died Tuesday night a little before 9 o’clock after a lingering illness which at times became serious. She had been in poor health for some years yet her vitality and will power rallied her remaining strength and she was able much of the time to be around. Since her husband’s death a year or more ago she made her home with her children and she was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Melton, when the call came.

Lydia Ann Wright was born at Racine, Wis., in 1861, and was married to C. N. Bartlett in 1883. To this union eleven children were born, five of whom died in infancy and childhood. They came to Ireton about 40 years ago and have lived here practically all the time since. Her life was not an easy one, a large family to which she was devoted kept her busy. She always had the welfare of the children at heart, sacrificing unstintingly for them. She was a wife and mother who lived for her home and was not much in outside circles. She became a member of the Methodist church years ago and although prevented by ill health from attending in late years she held steadfast to her faith.

She is survived by six children, Mrs. Judson Wheeler of Redwood Falls, Minn.; Mrs. Edward Kropp of Norfolk, Neb.; Alvin of Dalesburg, S.D.; and Earl, Floyd and Mrs. Robert Melton of Ireton. She leaves twenty-five grandchildren and four great grandchildren, one brother, Steve Wright of Des Moines, and one sister, Mrs. Luick Hildreth of Ankeny, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held from the Melton home and from the Methodist church with Rev. C. W. Tompkins in charge but the date has not been set at this writing. Interment will be made in Pleasant Hill cemetery beside her husband.

From the Hawarden Independent, September 15, 1932:

Many Attend Funeral Last Friday

Grandma Bartlett’s funeral was held last Friday from the home at 1:30 p.m. and from the Methodist Church at 2 o’clock, with Reverend C. W. Tompkins in charge. A large concourse of friends and neighbors were present to pay their last respects to the departed. The choir, consisting of Mrs. Morris Kluter, Bernice Vande Water, Frank Bartlett and L. D. Satterlee, sang several appropriate hymns, with Mrs. Tompkins at the piano. Many floral tributes brought a softening touch in their beauty and fragrance. Burial was made in the beautiful cemetery beside loved ones gone before.

Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Wheeler and daughter Ila of Redwood Falls, Minn., and son Russell of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kropp of Norfolk, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. Steve Wright and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wiggenjost of Des Moines; Mrs. Link Hildreth of Ankeny, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Swanson, Dorothy Bartlett and Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Bartlett and children of Dalesburg, S.D.
