Mrs. S. Plooster was born 89 years and 9 months ago in the Netherlands. At the age of five years she came to America with her parents and settled at Pella, Iowa. 37 years later she was married to Mr. Simon Plooster at Harrison, S.D. One child (Mrs. J. P. Calsbeek) was born to them. Mrs. Plooster has been making her home at the Pioneer home for the past 7 years and when she became ill last Saturday she was taken to the Doornink hospital, where she passed on a week later.

Besides her daughter and family she is survived by two brothers, H. P. Have of Omaha and Andrew Have of LaCrosse, Wis., and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday from the J. P. Calsbeek home and 1st Ref. church with Rev. Munsen officiating. Interment took place at the local cemetery.

A similar obituary was published in the Sioux County Capital, April 25, adding that she died at the Pioneer Home and had been ill only a week suffering from a stroke.

De Volksvriend, April 18, 1940, Pioneer Memorial Home news, says that last Friday she suffered a stroke just after dinner, was transferred to the Doornink hospital on Saturday, and is in serious condition.

RESEARCH NOTES

Her death certificate (informant J. Calsbeek) has Katie Plooster, widow of Simon Plooster; born August 6, 1850 in the Netherlands; parents H. P. Haze and Wilemina Liebreght; resident of Orange City; died in the Doornink Hospital, where she had been for 7 days, at 8 p.m. April 20, 1940; cause, apoplexy, duration 8 days; due to arteriosclerosis; buried in Orange City cemetery.

Her husband Simon appears in the Sioux County Cemetery Index, but she does not.

Her FindaGrave.com entry has Cornelia Arnolda “Kate” Plooster, born 6 Aug 1850 in Hurwenen, Maasdriel Municipality, Gelderland, Netherlands; died 4[sic] April 1940 in Orange City; buried in West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City. Parents Hendrik Pieters Haze (1818-1902) and Wilhelmina Liebrecht Haze (1819-1910). Seven siblings listed. Husband Simon Plooster (1857-1933, married 1892).

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index record for Cornelia Arnolda Haze, parents Hendrik Peter Haze, age 31, a shopkeeper, and Willemina Liebrecht; born 6 August 1850 in Hurwenen, Gelderland.

The 1900 U.S. census for Carroll Township, O’Brien County, Iowa has Simon Plooster (43), born in Holland, immigrated in 1875, naturalized, married 8 years, a farmer; wife Kate (49), mother of one child, born in Holland, immigrated in 1865; daughter Effie W. (5), born in South Dakota; and John Rykeboek, a farm laborer.

In 1910 the Plooster family is living in Holland Township, Sioux County: Simon (54), a peddler of groceries and dry goods; wife Kate (59), immigrated in 1857; daughter Aafje (15) and son Arnold (7, born in Iowa).

In 1920 Simon and Cornelia are living in Orange City, where he is a retail grocery merchant. His immigration year is given as 1874, naturalized in 1880; her immigration year is given as 1855, naturalized 1860. In 1930, still in Orange City, his occupation is given as Gardening—Horticulture; Simon immigrated in 1873 and Cornelia in 1856; they live next door to the Calsbeeks.
