From the Alton Democrat, April 26, 1940, Maurice news:

Relatives and friends were grieved when word was received here of the death of Charles De Groot, a former resident of Maurice, who died at his home in Sioux Falls Friday morning, April 18, following a heart attack. Mr. De Groot had gone to work as usual that morning at about 8 o’clock, but because he did not feel well he returned to his home about an hour later and passed away before a doctor could reach the house.

Charles De Groot was born April 2, 1886 in Kalamazoo, Mich., and moved to the Maurice vicinity with his parents when a young man. He was married to Ella Schmidts of Doon in 1912, the couple locating in Maurice where they lived continuously until five years ago when they moved to Sioux Falls. Besides his widow he leaves 3 children, Mathilda, George and Abel, all of Sioux Falls; his aged mother, Mrs. Abel DeGroot of Maurice; and two brothers, Harry of Doon and George of Maurice.

Funeral services were conducted from the Miller funeral home at Sioux Falls Saturday afternoon with Rev. Adams, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiating. Those from here attending the last rites were Mrs. Abel De Groot, Mr. and Mrs. George De Groot and daughter Esther Ruth, Dr. and Mrs. H. D. Oggel, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Mieras, Will Van Peursem and daughter Lucille, Mrs. Neal De Pree and son Kenneth, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Jansma, Mr. and Mrs. H. Vander Well, Mr. and Mrs. Ed DeJager; and Herman De Groot of Orange City.

CHARLES DeGROOT, 54, DIES SUDDENLY HERE
Heart Attack Claims Sioux Falls Contractor, Former Iowa Resident

Stricken with a heart attack. Charles DeGroot, 54-year-old builder and contractor, died suddenly this morning at his home, 1007 South Duluth ave.

Funeral services will be at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon in the Miller funeral chapel with Rev. Clarence W. Adams, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Mrs. Fred Whitfield will be the organist.

Mr. DeGroot came to Sioux Falls four and one-half years ago from Doon, Ia. Born April 2, 1886, in Kalamazoo, Mich., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Abel DeGroot who moved to Orange City, Ia., when Charles was four years old. The boy grew up at Orange City but lived for several years at Doon before coming to Sioux Falls. His marriage to Miss Ella A. Schmidt took place at Doon February 28, 1912. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Survivors include his widow, two sons, Abel, 1214 Glendale ave., and George at home, and one daughter Miss Mathilda, also living at the parental home. There are two brothers, Harry, Doon, and George, Morris, Ia.

His FindaGrave.com page has Charles De Groot, born 2 April 1886, died 18 April 1940, buried in Hills of Rest Memorial Park, Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. No other information.

The 1925 Iowa state census gives his parents as Abel De Groot and Sadie Jansma, both born in the Netherlands.

The Lyon County, Iowa marriage register for 1911/1912 has groom Charles De Groot, age 26, resident of Doon, a cement worker, born in Kalamazoo, Mich., parents Abel De Grooit and Sadie Jansma (the 1925 Iowa state census says they were both born in the Netherlands); bride Allmuth[?] Ella Schmidt, age 22, resident of Doon, born in Gillespie, Ill., parents George Schmidt and Lilley Smith; married in Doon February 28, 1912.

His World War I draft registration card (September 1918) shows him (age 32) a resident of Maurice, Sioux County; occupation, concrete work; wife Mrs. Ella De Groot; tall, medium build, gray eyes, light brown/bald hair.
