Mrs. Mary Schneider Buried at Alton

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Schneider, aged 87, were held at Mankato, Minn., Saturday morning and interment was at St. Mary’s cemetery at Alton in the afternoon following brief rites at the church. She was the wife of Jacob Schneider, deceased. Both were pioneer residents of the Alton vicinity. She is survived by four sons—John, Primghar; Nic, Wilmont, Minn.; Pete, Adrian, Minn.; and Bart of Mankato, Minn.; also by 22 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Those present at the funeral from out-of-town were: John Schneider, Primghar; Mr. and Mrs. Nic Schneider and four children, Wilmont; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schneider and five children, Adrian; Mr. and Mrs. B. Schneider and three children of Mankato; Mr. and Mrs. Gaspar Becher and son, Wilmont; John Sundbeck, Mankato; John and Catherine Schneider, Fulda, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Al Schneider, Ashton; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kool [or Kooi] and son of Orange City; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Schneider, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Ahlers, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ahlers, John Schuver, Joe Schuver and children, Mrs. Tony Schuver and daughter, all of Granville.

Mrs. Mary Schneider of LeRay Is Called

Mrs. Mary Schneider of Le Ray township died at the home of her son, Bart in that township last night. She was born in Germany in 1850.

The survivors are four sons: Bart of Le Ray, John of Pringhai[Primghar], Ia., Nick of Wilmont, J. Peter of Adrian, and 22 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held from SS. Peter and Paul’s Catholic church at 7 a.m. Saturday and the remains will be taken overland to Alton, Ia. for burial.

RESEARCH NOTES

Minnesota death certificate no. 1938-MN-001048: Mary Schneider; married, no husband’s name given; born Dec. 24, 1850 in Germany; parents’ names unknown to the informant, Bart Schneider; occupation, retired housewife; residence and place of death, Le Ray Township, Blue Earth County; died at 2:00 p.m. June 2, 1938; causes: cardiac collapse, sudden, and coronary sclerosis, duration 4 years; contributory causes, “infirmities of old age.”

She does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index.

Her FindaGrave page has her as Marie Hemmert Schneider; born 24 Dec 1850 in Obergailbach, Departement de la Moselle, Lorraine, France; died 2 June 1938 in Eagle Lake, Blue Earth County, Minnesota; buried in Saint Marys Cemetery, Alton. Spouse Jacob Schneider (1849-1899, married 1877). Three sons listed: John Nicolas Schneider (1880-1962), John Peter Schneider (1881-1955), and Bart Christopher Schneider (1884-1975).

The 1900 U.S. census shows her (as Mary) and sons Nick (20) and Bartholomew (16) living in East Orange Township, Sioux County. She is age 50, born December 1849, widowed, the mother of six children, four living, a farmer. All three were born in Germany, immigrated 1888. In the 1910 census she is still farming in East Orange Township, with her sons Peter and Bartholomew as farm laborers; her sons are naturalized, she is not. In 1920 she is living in rural Hidalgo County, Texas, with her son Bart (head of house, a farmer) and his family and her son J. Peter; she is still listed as an alien. In 1930 she is living in Le Ray Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota with her son Bart (a farmer) and his family; her birthplace is now given as France (although Bart’s is Germany), mother tongue of both is German; she is naturalized.
