Alvin J. Van Berkum
January 4, 1915—November 8, 1995
Alvin John Van Berkum, 80, of Orange City died Wednesday, November 8, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 11, at First Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. David Ter Beest and the Rev. Cornie Keunen officiating. Burial was at Capel Township Cemetery, near Middleburg.Van Berkum was born January 4. 1915, at Springfield, South Dakota, the son of John and Ann (Van Wyhe) Van Berkum. He was raised in the , Carmel area. He married Gertrude B. De Cook at Orange City on January H. 1939. He assisted on the Doornink farm and then the couple farmed for themselves north of Orange City. She died May 24.1954, at Sioux City.
He married Katie Peuse August 25, 1955 , at Orange City. They continued to farm until 1961, when they moved Into Orange City. He was also employed by Tri-State Livestock Sales In Sioux Center and later as a policeman in Orange City. In semi-retirement, he served as bailiff of the Sioux County Court House. He was a member of First Reformed Church and the Tri-State Peace Officers Association.
Survivors Include his wife; a son and his wife, Douglas and Linda Van Berkum of Orange City; two brothers and their wives, Larry and Dorothy Van Berkum of Rock Valley and Edwin and Eva Van Berkum of Inwood; a sister, Alice Prlns of Orange City; eight sisters-in-law, Alma Van Berkum of Sioux Center, Marie Van Berkum and Wes Van Berkum, bolh of Rock Valley, Jennie Van Roekel, Mattie Peuse and Cynthia Peuse, all of Orange City. Hester Peuse of Sioux Center and Irene Peuse of Sioux City; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Henry and Harriet Peuse of Orange City.
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded In death by two daughters, Mary Ann in infancy and Glenda Ruth; and four brothers, James, Garrold, Raymond and Wallace Van Berkum Memorials are being directed to the Heart Fund.
