Philip J. Van Gorp
Philip James Van Gorp, 81, of Sheldon, formerly of Boyden, died Saturday, June 10, at the Northwest Iowa Health Center - Senior Care in Sheldon. Funeral services were Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Boyden with the Rev. Brian Schafer and the Rev. Greg Timmer officiating. Burial was in the Sheridan Township Cemetery in Boyden.Van Gorp, the son of James E. and Rocina (De Boer) Van Gorp, was born September 9, 1924, on a farm south qf Hull, where he received his education. On March 29,; 1946, he married Joan Van Roekel in the parsonage of the First Reformed Church in Boyden. The couple lived in the Boyden area almost 60 years. He owned and operated the Boyden Truck Service for 26 years, hauling grain and livestock.'
He also worked for Farmers Feed in Boyden, Smit and Sons, Farmers Go-op Lumber and mowed for Sioux County in his retirement years.They moved into the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon in Nov. of 2005. Philip and Joan celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on mar. 29.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian church in Boyden and had served on the board of trustees for many years. He enjoyed farming, fishing, woodworking, camping and gardening. Phil and Joan enjoyed spending their winters in Texas for 15 years and Mesa AZ for 13 years.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Joan of Sheldon, their four daughers and their husbands, Phyllis and Jim Walburg of Spirit lake, Joyce and Orv Bruxvoort of Orange City, Janice and Ben Jans of Sioux Center and Karen and Garvin Buyert of Sheldon; eight grandchildren, Michelle and Rob Kremer, Lynn and John Jorgensen, Kari and Adir Morales, Laurie Walburg, Christier and Lance Kille, Brian Jans, Adam Buyert and Ambert Buyert; 10 great grandchildrfen; sisters Lois Rensink of Orange City and Eunice and her husband Don Van Der weide of Richville MN; brother and his wife earl and Wilma Van Gorp of Montevideo, MN; sister-in-law Gert Van Gorp and Bertha Van Gorp, each of Sheldon; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Marvin and Albert.
