J.H. Van Engen, 79, of Ireton died suddenly Saturday, August 14, at the Hawarden Community Hospital. Services were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Christian Reformed Church in Ireton with the Rev. Gary Luurtsema officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Ireton. Visitation was at the Potter-Dow Funeral Home in Ireton.

Van Engen was born March 12, 1914 in Doon, the son of Herman and Margaret (Otten) Van Engen. He was raised in the Doon area and married Gertie Termaat December 12, 1940. The couple farmed until retiring in 1978.

Van Engen was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Ireton and was active in the Foster Grandparent Program at Hope Haven in Rock Valley for the last five years.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters and their husbands, Rita and Dave Busse of Doon, Marjorie and Arlin Van Driel of Ireton, Kathy and Dale Nussbaum of Brookings, South Dakota, and Debra and Kim Nagel of White, South Dakota; three sons and their wives, Howard and Dorlinda of Hawarden, Wilmer and Linda of Hudson, South Dakota, and Bruce and Lana of Sanborn; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Marlon Van Engen of Lester; four sisters, Theresa Vander Woude of Doon, Sadie Van Engen of Rock Rapids, Gladys Vande Vooren of Colton, South Dakota, and Josephine Feucht of Canton, South Dakota.
