Harriet Barks, Aged 5 Dead
Seldom do the tragedies which fill the daily papers every day bring home to us the heartaches which the parents of some little one somewhere feel over the loss of their dearly beloved child. When it happens right at home to a sweet little girl such as Harriet Barks, ages 5, our hearts overflow with sympathy to the parents and grandparents.
Little Harriet was crushed beneath the wheels of a car Monday afternoon when she ran into the street following a little boy. Mr. Dick Vanderberg, driver of the car, had just slowed down to avoid hitting the little boy when the little girl ran immediately in front of the car, the front and back wheels crushing her little body so that she lived but an hour afterwards. It is not thought that she felt much pain after the accident and she was most of the time unconscious until the end.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Barks and one sister, Margaret, aged one. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. J. D. Dykstra Wednesday afternoon. Burial was at the Orange City cemetery. The beautiful Christian fortitude of the stricken parents is an inspiration to their multitude of friends.
