Nellie was the daughter of Andrew and Ella (Mantel) Vande Griend. She was raised at Middleburg. On July 17, 1929, she married Alferd Van Meeveren Orange City. They farmed north of Orange City. In 1948, they moved into Orange City. Alferd passed away October 4, 1996, in Orange City. In February of 2001, she became a resident of the Orange City Municipal Hospital Long Term Care Facility.
Mrs. Van Meeveren was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she had participated in Ladies Aid in earlier years. She enjoyed crocheting.
Survivors include her two daughters and their husband Ella Mae and Merle Van Klompenburg and Arlene and Jack Mouw, all of Orange City; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death a brother, Jake A. Vande Griend, and a sister, Elizabeth Plender.
