Marilyn Joy Coenen, daughter of Leo and Ida (Nelson) Rushenberg, was born on October 26, 1929 near Defiance, Iowa. She attended and graduated from St. Paul’s Catholic School in Defiance.

Marilyn was united in marriage to John H. Coenen on March 29, 1948, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. Eight children were born to this union: Mary Lynn, David, James, Connie, Debbie, Tim, John and Cindy. John and Marilyn made their home on John’s parents farm outside of Defiance, Iowa. Marilyn was a dedicated mother who spent a majority of her time raising her kids on the farm.

After her children were through school, Marilyn spent ten years working for CDS in Harlan where she made many friends. She enjoyed the farm where she loved tending her flower garden. Marilyn was a lifetime active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. She also enjoyed shopping, dancing, attending craft shows, baking and most of all traveling to see her children and grandchildren.

In September of 2009, Marilyn made her home at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa and this is where she died on October 27, 2012, one day after her eighty-third birthday. In addition to her parents, Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband.

Marilyn is survived by her children: Mary Lynn and her husband Joe Henscheid of Des Moines, Iowa; David Coenen and his wife Cheryl of Westminster, Colorado; Jim Coenen and his wife Mary Jo of Erie, Colorado; Connie and her husband Jeff Christiansen of Norfolk, Nebraska; Debbie and her husband Arthur Dichard of Westminster, Colorado; Tim Coenen and his wife Chris of Defiance, Iowa; John Coenen of Broomfield, Colorado and Cindy and her husband Rick Haskell of Parker, Colorado; fifteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; her brother and sisters: G. L. "Bud" Rushenberg of Des Moines; Carol Hooper of Denver, Colorado and Darlene and her husband Charles Stessman of Des Moines, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Rev. Chris Fontanini celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, October 29, 2012 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. Music was provided by Judy Rewerts and Joyce Amdor. Serving as casket bearers were David Coenen, Neil Coenen, John Coenen, A. J. Dichard, Andy Christiansen, Brandon Roberts, and Matt Christiansen. Interment was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Defiance.
