Darrell B. Coenen - Age 52

Darrell Bernard Coenen was born on August 1, 1960 to Ivo and Bernadine (Pauley) Coenen in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. He graduated from Manilla High School with the Class of 1978 and received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri in 1984.

On May 24, 1997, he was united in marriage to Julie Marshall at the United Church of Christ in Avoca, Iowa.

Darrell worked as a clerk and then became the manager of the Park Motel in Denison. During the Donna Reed Festival, he would get to visit with television and movie stars. Some of his favorites were Mike Farrell from "MASH", and Shelly Fabares and Paul Peterson from "The Donna Reed Show". He became the assistant manager of the Forrest Lodge motel in Harlan and enjoyed his career as an inn keeper.

He enjoyed computer games and doing crossword puzzles. He read different newspapers to keep up on current events. Darrell loved all sports but would always watch the Minnesota Twins, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He always wore a baseball cap and loved his dog, Missy.

Darrell died unexpectedly in his home in Earling on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, having attained the age of fifty-two years, two months, and one day. He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his mother Bernadine Coenen of Harlan, Iowa; wife Julie Coenen of Harlan; brothers Randy Coenen and his wife Lila of Arion, Iowa and Robert Coenen and his wife Melanie of Denison, Iowa; sisters Nancy and her husband Jeff Renze of Carroll, Iowa and Diane Coenen of Harlan; other family members and friends.

Rev. John Frost celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, October 5, 2012 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Russell Coenen, Jim Chance, Ryan Coenen, Bob Coenen, Jeff Renze, and Jeff Chance. Interment was held at the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa.
