Born: March 14, 1914, on the family farm located 3 miles west of Shelby, IA

Died: March 4, 2008, Myrtue Medical Center, Harlan, IA

Funeral services: Saturday, March 8, 2008, United Lutheran Church, Shelby, IA; Pastor Duane Anunson officiated. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, IA.

Survived by: Son, Barry (spouse, Carol) Cushing of Meridian, ID; daughter, Judy (spouse, George) Huckins of Kansas City, MO; sister-in-law, Dorothy (spouse, Lewis) Muzzy of Spring Valley, CA; 6 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; other relatives and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Charlie Andrew and Lizzy (nee Boeck) Cushing; wife, Darlene (deceased Feb. 6, 2008); brother, Wilbert Cushing; sister, Ellen Robacker

Education: graduated from Shelby High School, Class of 1932

Marriage: Darlene Virginia Eckel, Sept. 16, 1939, Council Bluffs, IA

Employment: After graduating from high school, he did various jobs, including working as a school bus driver; from 1947 to 1966, Short was a tractor shop mechanic for Kiesel Implement; he later purchased the business and renamed it The Cushing Garage, running it until his retirement in 1976.

Hobbies/Interests: Member, United Lutheran Church, Shelby, IA; 50-year member of the Shelby Volunteer Fire Department, having served as Fire Chief from 1943-1968. Loved to travel, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and playing card games, particularly the old German game, Schafkoph. He also liked to hunt, fish, and trap. Short kept a large garden, including quality raspberries and black walnuts.
