James Aaron Butt was born in Crawford County IN April 5, 1843 & died at his home in Diagonal IA on March 28, 1930.
When he was 18 years old he wished to enlisted in the Army at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. However his parents objected and refused to give their consent to his wish. In the next year and within a period of two weeks time both father and mother died, and on August 11, 1862 he enlisted in Co K th Indiana Volunteers.
Mr. Butt was in most of the battles in which the Army of the Cumberland were engaged.
On New Year's morning of 1863 during the battle of Stony River, Tenn., he was wounded. He served during the remainder of the war, being discharged on June 13, 1865.
August 10, 1865 he was united in marriage to Mary Eleanor Sprinkle. To this union were born ten children, eight sons and two daughters. All of these children except one son, Francis, who died in infancy, survive.
His wife preceded him in death July 27, 1916. The children surviving are William, John, Sydney, Charles, Theodore, Solomon, Edward, Mrs. J.H. (Marcia) Yaryan and Mrs. C.C. (Ida Pearl) Ives.
Mr. Butt came from his home in Indiana to Iowa and settled in Jefferson Township, Ringgold County December 1, 1883. He has resided in this community continously since that time, more than 46 years. When a young man he joined the Church of Christ and after moving to Iowa transferred his membership to the Freewill Baptist church of Knowlton of which he was a charter member. This church was disbanded but he remained in that faith until death, never affiliating with another denomination.
He was a member of the G.A.R. post of Shannon City and a member of the Goshen Lodge No 53, IOOF lodge of Diagonal, having held membership in the latter order since Sept. 1894.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 PM at the Diagonal Methodist Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. Matheny. The American Legion post of Mt ayr had a part in the service at the church and also the military service at the Knowlton cemetery where interment was made. About 75 members of the IOOF attended the funeral service in a body. (source: obituary)
