Friends in Diagonal and community were shocked and grieved late Monday afternoon when they learned of the death of G.W. (William) Butt who passed away at his home here. While not in good health for many years, Mr. Butt had recently been down town as usual and his last illness was of only a few days duration.
Mr. Butt was genuinely respected in Diagonal and his quiet manner made him many friends. Although never married, his interests in the community were not limited and he was especially interested in the school and its athletic teams, being present regularly at the basketball games as long as his health permitted.
Possessed of a remarkable memory, he was a source of information on events that had transpired in this community during the past half century.
George William Butt, son of James A and Mary E Butt, was born July 7, 1866 in Branchville, Perry County IN and passed away at his home in Diagonal October 6, 1941 at the age of 75 years.
In 1879 he moved with his parents to Owensville, Gibson County IN, and on December 1, 1883 he moved to Jefferson Twp., ringgold County IA.
His early life was spent in farming and after retiring from that occupation he was postmaster at Knowlton for 4 years. He came to Diagonal in 1918, and made his home here until his death.
In 1892 he joined the IOOF lodge. He was noted for his memory and when a question arose concerning some event of the past people would go to him for setlement.
He leaves six brothers and one sister: John Butt, Shannon City IA; Sidney E. Butt, Benton IA; Charles Wesley Butt of Minneapolis MN; Theordore Butt of Wimbleton ND; James Solomon Butt of Shannon City IA; Edward M. Butt Diagonal IA; and Mrs. C.C., (Pearl) Ives of Kalona IA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother Francis Adolph and a sister, Marcia Yaryan.
funeral services were hed at the local Methodist church in charge of the pastor, Milton Kinney. Burial was in Knowlton cemetery.
