Mount Ayr teenager killed in tragic
one-car accident early Saturday

A Mount Ayr teenager was killed and another one injured in a traffic accident Saturday morning following the Mount Ayr Community high school homecoming celebration.

Konner Evan KLOMMHAUS, 15, was pronounced dead at the scene of a single car accident on 290th Street, a dirt road, just west of the intersection with 215th Street some five miles south of Mount Ayr.

Also seriously injured in the accident was Erik Joseph FREED, 15,of Redding, the passenger in the vehicle. Both passengers were ejected from the car in the accident, which happened at approximately 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning, according to the Ringgold County Sheriff's Office, which is leading the investigation.

According to a press release from the sheriff's office, the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Family began searching for the youth when they did not arrive home from the homecoming dance.

KLOMMHAUS and FREED were sophomores at Mount Ayr Community high school.

First Responders, Mount Ayr Fire Department, Ringgold County Ambulance personnel all responded to emergency calls to help at the scene.

FREED was transported to Ringgold County Hospital by ambulance and later flown by Mercy One to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Several members of the football team, of which FREED is a player, gathered at the hospital in support of their injured teammate.

Word of the tragedy spread quickly through the school community, which had dealt with the death of a schoolmate at the elementary school on the final day of the 2010-11 school year.

The Mount Ayr Communty Raiderette volleyball team dropped out of the Bedford tournament Saturday because of the tragedy.

Counselors were on hand Monday to help students deal with the loss of their classmate.

Word was that FREED might be released from the hospital later this week, if he continued to improve, after injuries suffered from the impact.

Funeral services were set for Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Mount Ayr Community high school gymnasium for KLOMMHAUS, the son of Debbie KLOMMHAUS and Kory KLOMMHAUS of Mount Ayr.

An obituary is included in today's Mount Ayr Record-News.

To allow students to attend the visitation Tuesday night, Tuesday athletic activities including varsity volleyball, middle school volleyball and middle school and varsity cross country were cancelled or postponed.

The varisty volleyball meet with Nodaway Valley was tentatively rescheduled for today (Thursday, Sept. 29.)

OBITUARY ~ KONNER EVAN KLOMMHAUS

March 25, 1996 ~ September 24, 2011

Konner Evan KLOMMHAUS, son of Kory and Deborah (FARIS) KLOMMHAUS, was born March 25, 1996 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Konner entered into God's gates on September 24, 2011.

Konner was a playful boy who grew into a mature and caring young man. He loved spending his summer days with Papa Lyle on the farm and in the fields. Konner was proud of his responsibilities getting up early every morning to do chores for Lyle and all the other neighborhood farming friends. He made sure he tested Kylee at all possible moments, but the ornery little smile always said he did it with love. Konner loved teasing his cousins Alaina and Taylor and they respectfully returned the tease with a nickname "Hairy Armpits."

He was loved for his witty humor, pester, and playfulness. Konner was a sophomore at Mount Ayr Community High School. He is a member of Future Farmers of America, T.S.A., and Jr. Farmer's 4-H and loved washing his sister's calves for her.

We've all seen Konner bring a room to their knees with his Phil YODER impersonations, which was done in love.

Survivors include his parents Debbie KLOMMHAUS and Kory KLOMMHAUS of Mount Ayr; sister Kylee Kay KLOMMHAUS and brother Gavyn Dean KLOMMHAUS; grandparents Lyle (Betty) FARIS and Kay FARIS, all of Mount Ayr, Jewel (Ron) BASELEY of Creston and Gene KLOMMHAUS of Ellston; great-grandmother Carol BLANKEN of Creston; aunt Dianna (Jeff) TAYLOR and cousin Alaina BRINCKS; aunt Deanna PENNINGS and cousin Taylor PENNINGS; uncle Kevin (Shellie) KLOMMHAUS and cousins Kaitlyn, Kasydi, and Kade KLOMMHAUS; uncle Kelly (Christy) KLOMMHAUS and cousins Keirston, Keelan, Kolben, and Kacee KLOMMHAUS.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents Wilbur & Eva FARIS, Rupert JOHNSTON, DonNell (Russell) BOYD, Bud BLANKEN, Clarence & Viola KLOMMHAUS.
