OBITUARY ~ CHARLES M. KING

Charles M. KING, son of Benjamin B. and Elizabeth JACOBS KING, was born November 19, 1864, in Scott county, Iowa. He came in childhood to the farm in Grant township, where he grew to manhood. He was married December 31, 1885, to Mary Jane STAHL.

In 1888 he entered the service of the Milwaukee railroad as telegrapher and station agent in northwest Iowa. Returning to Ringgold county, he engaged in the hardware business at Diagonal until he was elected sheriff of Ringgold county in 1915. In 1919 he became agent for the American Express Co., which he held until his health compelled him to resign.

He died December 9, 1943, at his home in Mount Ayr.

He leaves his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Nellie SWAN of Clearfield, Mrs. Helen CLOUGH of Panora, and Mrs. Birdice HORNE of Mount Ayr; and a son, Merrill of Eden, Utah. One daughter died in Diagonal in 1911 in girlhood.

He is also survived by two sisers, Mrs. Ida STAMPER of Shannon City and Mrs. Sadie HANNELLY of Los Angeles, California. Four grandsons are in the armed forces of the county. Six granddaughters and six great-grandchildren and other relatives mourn his death.

He was an official member of the Methodist church both in Diagonal and in Mount Ayr.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church December 12, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Frank MOORE. Burial was in Bethel cemetery beside the grave of his daughter, Florence.
