OBITUARY ~ DR. ARTHUR E. JESSUP

Dr. Arthur E. JESSUP died January 12, 1944, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul BEYMER, in Diagonal. Practically all of his life was spent in southern Iowa. He was born November 15, 1869, near Macksburg, where he graduated from high school. He later taught school and worked in a drug store in Creston, where he became a registered pharmacist. After studying medicine in Des Moines and Iowa City, where he graduated in 1895 from the University of Iowa with the degree of M.D., he practiced medicine at Caledonia for four years. He was married March 2, 1896, to Harriett Mary MEKEMSON, of the Redding vicinity, who with three daughters survive him.

After leaving Caledonia they moved to Oregon, but the following year returned to Taylor county, where he praciced medicine and conducted a drug store. In 1909 he located in Diagonal, which has since been his home, practicing medicine and maintaining a drug store. His son-in-law, Paul BEYMER, has been his partner in the drug store until a year ago when Dr. JESSUP retired from the firm. He continued his medical practice until November, when his fatal illness began.

Dr. JESSUP became a member of the Baptist church in early youth in his native town of Macksburg. On coming to Diagonal he became an active member of the Presbyterian church.

Dr. JESSUP leaves his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Vera BEYMER of Diagonal, Mrs. Ruth J. GREENE of Hebron, N.D., and Miss Dorothy JESSUP of Topeka; one son, the Rev. Dale E. JESSUP of Kansas City; one sister, Mrs. Ella MYERS of Escondido, California; one brother, Lewis JESSUP of Banning, California; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held January 14 at the Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev. John NUENSCHWANDER, of Creston, with interment in the Diagonal cemetery.
