OBITUARY - SIGEL R. LESAN

Word has been received of the death of a former Chanute [KS] area resident, Sigel R. LESAN, 85, July 21 [1974] in Oklahoma City after a lingering illness.

Residents of Thayer recall that "Old Sailor," as he was called, would load his truck with produce from his farm and leave the truck in the street while he ate lunch so those who wished could help themselves to fresh vegetables free of charge.

Born in Ringgold County, Iowa, he worked in construction until joining the Navy to "make a trip around the world in 1908," traveling to Denver, Colo., from Utah with a mule team to enlist.

After 16 years in foreign countries and service in World War I he was stationed at Great Lakes Training Station, Illinois, until the late 1930's. He came to Kansas and farmed until recalled for Navy duty during World War II, returning to Thayer in 1946. He moved to Oklahoma City in 1972 because of failing health.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. E. B. PENCE, Oklahoma City, and a brother, Jack O. LESAN, 915 W. 1st, and Albert LESAN, 111 S. Larson, are nephews.
