IN MEMORIAM.

Mrs. Martha ELLIOTT THRIFT was born at Beaves (sic), Beaver county, Pennsylvania, March 20, 1837, and passed away at her home in Diagonal, Iowa, on February 28, 1928, at the age of 90 years, 11 months and eight days.

Miss Martha ELLIOTT was united in marriage to George SPAHN, of Beaver, Pa., in 1859, and to this union two children were born, one son and one daughter. On August 15, 1865, she was united in marriake (sic) to John H. SIMPSON, of Winfield, Iowa, and to this union four children were born, on son and three daughter (sic). On December 12, 1877, she was again united in marriage to E. L. THRIFT and to this union was born one daughter, Pearl, deceased.

She was a true and faithful wife and mother and a real friend and neighbor, always having a cheerful word and a helping hand for all who were sick or in trouble of any nature. She had endured many of the hardships of the early pioneers and has passed the four score and ten post, but has had to yield to the mighty blade of the harvester.

She leaves to mourn her death her husband, E. L. THRIFT, two sons, Harvey SPAHN, of Diagonal, Iowa, and A. E. SIMPSON, of Sargent, Neb.; two daughters, Mrs. S. W. TAYLOR and Mrs. D. L. PARKINS, both of Diagonal, Iowa; seven grandsons, eight granddaughters, eight great-grandsons and seven great-granddaughters, one sister, Mrs. Geo. CALHOUN, of Georgetown, Pa., and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. D. THOMPSON. Interment was made at Bethel cemetery [near Diagonal].

NOTE: John H. SIMPSON, second husband of Martha (ELLIOTT) died on November 22, 1876 with interment at Bethel Cemetery near Diagonal, Ringgold County, Iowa.

E. L. THRIFT, third husband of Martha (ELLIOTT), was born on February 23, 1853, and died on November 13, 1951 with interment at Bethel Cemetery. E. L.'s first wife Ida died at the age of 22 years, 11 months and 2 days on September 26, 1875 with interment at Bethel Cemetery.
