OBITUARY - WELDON C. SWIGART

Weldon SWIGART, 97, of Creston died Thursday, January 29, 2009 at Crest Haven Care Centre in Creston. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Creston. Pastor Robert SAUSER and Rev. Norman HOAG will officiate the service. Burial will be at the Graceland Cemetery south of Creston. Open visitation with family receiving friends will be from 10 am to 1 pm service time Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Creston. Memorials can be made to First Baptist Church and or the Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Ventura, Ia. Powers Funeral Home in Creston jct. hwy 34 & 25, is in charge of the arrangements. Weldon C. SWIGART, son of Grant SWIGART and Eva (McANINCH) was born July 17, 1911 in Ringgold Co., Iowa. He attended the Corn Stalk College Country School. On February 12, 1936, Weldon was united in marriage to L. Ruth GILLILAND in Mount Ayr, Iowa. They settled on a farm near Kellerton, Iowa. Weldon farmed in Ringgold, Adams, Madison, and Union counties until retiring in 1976. He then worked for a local funeral home for 15 years.

Weldon was a member of the First Baptist Church in Creston, where he was a deacon, trustee, Sunday school teacher, youth sponsor and a choir member. He was also a member of the Cattlemen’s Association, Farm Bureau, Farmers’ Co-op, school board chairman in Winterset, and Charter Member of Grace Baptist Church in 1949.

Survivors include; two sons: Earl (wife Eleanore) SWIGART of Stevens Point, Wis. and Marvin (wife Faye) SWIGART of Parker, Colo.; a daughter-in-law Phyllis SWIGART of Union Grove, Wis.; a brother in-law: Lyle (wife Jean) GILLILAND of Mount Ayr, Ia.; two sisters-in-law, Wilma SWIGART and Doris SWIGART, both of Lamoni; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Weldon was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruth in 2008; two sons Glenn David and Kenneth Dale SWIGART; four sisters Dora BENNETT, Donna GREIMANN, Cleta DIXON and Ruth ARCHABALD; three brothers, Francis, Merritt and Paul and two great-grandchildren Brandon SWIGART and Madison Ann SHAW.
