OBITUARY - L. RUTH (GILLILAND) SWIGART

L. Ruth SWIGART, 92, of Creston died Friday, December 26, 2008 at Crest Haven Care Centre.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Creston. Pastor Robert SAUSER and Rev. Norman HOAG, will officiate the service.

Burial will be at the Graceland Cemetery south of Creston. Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm Monday, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 pm at the Powers Funeral Home at the jct. of highways 25 and 34; in Creston. Memorials can be made to First Baptist Church or Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Ventura, Ia. Online condolences may be given under the obituary category at www.powersfh.com.

L. Ruth SWIGART, daughter of Inez (WAERS) and David Franklin GILLILAND was born January 5, 1916 on the family farm in Riley Township in Ringgold County. Ruth graduated from Mount Ayr High School, before attending teacher’s school. On February 12, 1936, Ruth was united in marriage to Weldon C. SWIGART in Mt. Ayr, Iowa.

They settled on a farm near Kellerton, Iowa, before moving to Arispe and later to Creston in 1941.

Ruth and her family moved again to rural Madison County in 1949 where they continued to farm and she worked as a bookkeeper for Flatts Clothing Store before returning to the Creston area. Ruth was a charter member of the Grace Baptist Church in 1949 and later an active member of both the Grace Baptist Church in Winterset and the First Baptist Church in Creston, where she was a dedicated musician, Sunday school teacher and person of hospitality. She also was a member of the Ladies Missionary Organization as well.

Survivors include her husband: Weldon C. of Creston; two sons: Earl (wife Eleanore) SWIGART of Stevens Point, Wis. and Marvin (wife Faye) SWIGART of Parker, Colo.; a daughter -in-law Phyllis SWIGART of Union Grove, Wis.; a brother: Lyle (wife Jean) GILLILAND of Mount Ayr, Ia.; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces nephews and friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; two sons Glenn David and Kenneth Dale SWIGART; a sister Ruby SWIGART and two great-grandchildren Brandon SWIGART and Madison SHAW.
