OBITUARY - VESTA (INGRAM) STILL

Vesta STILL, daughter of Herman & Mildred (SPENCER) INGRAM, was born July 17, 1926 near Caledonia, [Ringgold County] Iowa. She graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1944, received her teaching certificate and taught country school at Caledonia.

Vesta was united in marriage to Raymond D. STILL on August 18, 1945 in Troy, Kansas. Being a farmer’s wife, helpmate, and homemaker were important roles for her. She was a loving mother to their five children and enjoyed attending their many sports and other activities.

Vesta was a member of the United Baptist-Presbyterian Church. She had been very active in the country churches of Mount Zion and Caledonia prior to their closing. She and Ray were youth group leaders, giving good spiritual guidance along with fun actitivies.

Vesta earned her L.P.N. license at age 59 and worked several years at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr.

Vesta’s love of nature was expressed through her large flower and vegetable gardens as well as sharing knowledge of trees and birds to her family and others. Her crochet and embroidery handiwork is treasured by her family members. Keeping photo albums and scrapbooks updated also kept her busy.

Family gatherings, picnics, games, reunions, and keeping in touch were a very important part of her life. Vesta’s talent for storytelling was enjoyed by all generations of her large family.

Vesta had been a resident of Clearview Home and she passed away there on December 19, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ray on August 13, 1994; son-in-law Arlen THAMKE; a sister Evelyn MARRS; and two brothers Melvin & Corwin INGRAM.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons David & wife Marie, Dick & wife Bonnie, Mick & wife Patty, all of Mount Ayr and Ted & wife Cheryl of St. Joseph, MO; a daughter Florine MURRAY of Jewell, IA; 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren; a brother Myron & wife Shirley INGRAM; brothers-in-law Sam MARRS of Bethany, MO, Lee STILL of Davenport, IA, Eldon & wife Jan STILL, and Ed STILL and Glenda of Mount Ayr; sisters-in-law Shirley INGRAM of Perry, IA, Frieda INGRAM of Ames, IA, Joyce & husband Jim JOHNSON of Mount Ayr, and Ethyl STILL of Mount Ayr; other relatives and friends.
