The Ringgold Record, 1891

DEATH of WM. SNEDAKER.

Died, at his son's residence in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, on Saturday, Nov. 28th, 1891, Wm. SNEDAKER, aged 80 years, 7 months and 27 days.

Mr. SNEDAKER was born near Wheeling, West Virginia, April 1, 1811. On March 23, 1835, in Brown county, Ohio, he married his wife, Miss Jane McCOY, who has journeyed with him nearly 57 years. On March 23, 1885, they observed at their home their golden wedding. At that time their pastor, Rev. E. P. WOOD, addressed them on the fact that they were respected and honored by their children, and that the whole community esteemed them worthy of honor. The large company present heartily said amen. At the residence of their daughter, Mrs. N. W. CLARK in Mt. Ayr, the 56th anniversary of their marriage was celebrated March 23, 1891. They then received many tokens of respect and were congratulated on the fact that they were honored by their children and were regarded worthy of honor, a great attainment. They had eleven children, three of whom have passed on before them. Eight are now living, three sons and five daughters. They have seen twenty eight grandchildren.

Mr. SNEDAKER lived in Illinois some thirty years and came to Ringgold county in 1879. For long years he had been a member of the Presbyterian church and for many years a ruling elder. He was noted as being a prudent and judicious counsellor. That church having grown feeble in Mt. Ayr, Mr. SNEDAKER had united with the United Presbyterian church, and always when able attended the services. He was ever on the side of right and rejoiced in the progress of good. The funeral took place from the U.P. church, Sabbath, November 29th, and was conducted by Rev. Thos. McCAGUE. He preached a most appropriate discourse from Gen. 25:8, "Then Abraham gave up the ghost and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his fathers." Mrs. SNEDAKER, born July 2, 1813, remains for a little to mourn his loss. A large assembly of friends attended the funeral and followed the remains to the south [Rose Hill] cemetery.
