OBITUARY - CAROLYN MAE (WARRICK) DENHART

Carolyn Mae (WARRICK) DENHART was born on the family farm near Caledonia in southern Ringgold County on May 27, 1925. She was the second of three daughters born to Ora Ruth (ANDERSON) and William John WARRICK. She died at Clearview Homes in Mount Ayr on February 10, 2007.

On January 28, 1942 she was united in marriage to Doyle James DENHART in Stanberry, MO. To this union two sons were born, Joseph William and James Douglas.

She was baptized at an early age at the First Baptist Church in Mount Ayr. She was an active member until transferring her membership after their marriage to Doyle’s church, First Christian Church.

After Doyle was drafted into the Army in October 1944 she and her sister, Elizabeth and their children moved to the family farm with their father for the duration of WWII. Following the war she and Doyle resided there until 1952 at which time they moved to Mount Ayr. In 1957 they returned to the farm home and following Doyle’s death in 1998 she remained there slightly over two years at which time she moved to Country Ayr apartment complex in Mount Ayr.

Carolyn was a mother and homemaker. She was involved in the Parent Teacher Organization, room mother for both boys in grade school, and a Cub Scout leader. She instilled in her children and grandchildren her own love of books, reading and life-long learning. She had a standing tradition of giving each person in her immediate family a book at Christmas time. She read each book herself before gifting them.

She started work in the USDA-ASCS office and was employed there thirty-two years until retiring as Chief Program Assistant in December 1987. She immensely enjoyed working and having an association with the farming and agricultural community.

She was an active member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, which she helped to organize after WWII, a member of the Federal Employees, and a past member of the Iowa Women Political Caucus, National Organization of Women (NOW), and Citizens to Protect Our Environment. She also served on the Ringgold County Compensation Board from 1991-1998. She was also active in the Democratic Party.

After retiring she began her much-loved quilting hobby. She hand pieced and hand stitched over 25 quilts for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Each quilt was dated and signed with love.

Carolyn enjoyed so much her Tuesday quilting and sewing club, the Wednesday ladies dinner group and the Friday night ladies social get together. Her friends in these groups, as well as her church family, were an important part of her life for the past several years. A special event in her life was traveling to Ireland to visit and acquaint herself with her Irish cousins.

After several years of slowly declining health Carolyn was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines for three weeks. After enduring a hard fought battle she was transferred into Hospice Care at Clearview Homes in Mount Ayr for less than a week.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle, her parents, her older sister, Elizabeth, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and Frank McCLURG, brother-in-law, Vern MAULDIN.

She is survived by her sons, Joseph William and wife Julie, of Shenandoah, and James Douglas and wife Rita, of Des Moines, five grandchildren, Jason William and wife Fara of Avon, CO, Joshua Wade and wife Sarah of West Des Moines, Scott James and wife Janean, Andrea Kay VOSEN and husband Russell of Des Moines, Rachel Ann DICKINSON and husband Scott of Cedar Falls, five great-grandchildren, Kyair Terryl BUTTS, Kadan James and Kyanna Grace VOSEN of Des Moines, Hannah Nawal and Caleb Josiah DENHART of West Des Moines. She is also survived by her sister, Ruth Estel MAULDIN of Leavenworth, KS, cousin and special friend, Ruby ANDERSON, brother-in-law Frank A. DREDGE, sister-in-law Marilyn RICHARDS and husband Robert (Hap) of Mount Ayr, brother-in-law Donald DENHART and wife Lucille of Davenport, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were held on Thursday, February 13, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., First Christian Church, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
