OBITUARY - CAROLE ANN (JOHNSON) AKERS

Carole Ann JOHNSON was born on Christmas Day, December 25th, 1946, at Cedar Falls, Iowa, to Louis JOHNSON and Marie A. (PETERS) JOHNSON. She departed this life on May 9th, 2007 at the age of 60 years.

Carole grew up in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area with her sister Jaynene and brother Dennis. When Carole Ann was a young girl, Marie married Harold SHADE, and he later adopted Carole. Carole attended Catholic grade school, and enjoyed being part of the Church, especially singing in the choir.

When she was in high school, Carole moved to the small town of Wick, Iowa, and attended high school at Martensdale-St. Marys, graduating with the class of 1965. She enjoyed being part of a small community, and made many life-long friends there. After graduation, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa and worked as a tele-type operator.

On November 18th, 1967, she was united in marriage to Monte Dean AKERS at Des Moines, Iowa. They made there home in Ames, Iowa and Carole worked at Iowa State University in the publications office while Monte finished his degree. After Monte’s graduation in 1969, they moved to Perry, Iowa where Monte was employed with the Brenton 1st National Bank. Carole worked for a local accountant as a secretary, and she and Monte participated in many volunteer and community activities.

Carole and Monte were blessed with the birth of their daughter Amelia Dyan in 1970. After Amelia was born, Carole stayed home and loved being a mother to their young daughter.

In 1974, Carole and Monte moved to the family farm near Kellerton, Iowa, where in 1975 their son Justin was born. Carole enjoyed farm life, even though she grew up in town. She loved being outdoors in the yard and garden. She learned to raise sheep along with Monte, Amelia, and Justin, and always enjoyed the springtime when the new little lambs were born.

Carole was a warm and caring person, who always put others’ needs ahead of her own. She loved being a homemaker, and a mother and wife to her family. She always encouraged her children to pursue new interests, and was always there with a helping hand to help them succeed. After the children were grown, she also spent many hours lovingly caring for Monte’s relatives, as well as her own.

Carole also loved to learn new things, and did so throughout her life. She loved music and took piano lessons throughout adulthood. She played the guitar, and had a beautiful singing voice. She was very creative, and enjoyed making soy candles at home and selling them under the name of Carole’s Soy Creations for several years, until her health no longer allowed her to continue. She also sold Avon products to her friends and neighbors, and looked forward to her visits with them during each campaign.

Carole was involved in the community throughout her life, and had many friends. She worked part-time at the Kellerton Post Office, and helped organize the Grand Valley PTO Boosters when the children were in school. She also supported Monte while he served on the Grand Valley School Board. She belonged to Ladies Unlimited in Mount Ayr, the Kellerton United Methodist Women, the Kellerton American Legion Auxiliary, and had been a member of the Ringgold Singers.

In 2003, Carole was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought cancer with tremendous strength, and was an inspiration to all she knew. Even though her health limited her activities, it did not at all dampen her spirit. She always had a smile on her face, and continued to care for her family and friends, and participate in the community as much as possible. She belonged to A New Beginning Cancer Support Group, and found comfort in associating with women who were fighting cancer. She also greatly enjoyed getting together in Kellerton each morning with her friends for coffee at the community center.

Carole will always be remembered as a devoted wife, mother and friend. Her faith sustained her throughout her life, in good times and in hard times. We can take comfort in the knowledge that she is now at home with Jesus, where at last she can rest without pain, her earthly work well done.

Preceding Carole in death were her fathers Louis JOHNSON in 1977, Harold SHADE in 1994, and Monte’s parents Harold AKERS in 2004, and Theola AKERS in 2003.

Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband Monte of Kellerton, Iowa; daughter Amelia AKERS-MARTIN and husband Francisco of San José, California; son Justin and wife Kristen AKRES, and newborn grandson Franklin AKRES of Kellerton, Iowa; her mother Marie MURPHY of Mount Ayr; sister Jaynene JOHNSON of Waterloo, Iowa; brother Dennis Johnson, and his wife Margaret (Peggy) JOHNSON and family of Chillicothe, Illinois; sister-in-law Karen Kay McDOWELL and family of Omaha, Nebraska; as well as a host of devoted family, friends, and neighbors.
