OBITUARY - FRANKLIN SMITH MAIN

Franklin Smith MAIN, son of Lewis C. and Clara L. (SMITH) MAIN, was born November 3, 1916 in Mount Ayr, Iowa and died on December 10, 2008 at Overland Park, Kansas at the age of 92 years. He attended rural schools in Ringgold County and graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1934.

Franklin was united in marriage to Donna Louise BURCHETT on March 21, 1937 in Mount Ayr, Iowa. They farmed in Ringgold County until 1945 when they moved to Decatur County where they later purchased a farm in 1947 and lived there until 1974. Their home was blessed with a daughter Nancy Lorene and son Franklin Stewart. Upon retiring from farming, they moved to Lamoni, Iowa living there 13 years. In 1986 they moved to Creston, Iowa. In 1997, they moved to Raymore, Missouri. Franklin later moved to Overland Park, Kansas where he most recently resided at Vintage Park Assisted Living where he enjoyed making new friends.

Franklin served in the Iowa Legislature in both the House of Representatives and the Senate from 1958 through 1969. He served on the Board of Supervisors in Decatur County from 1978 to 1985. Through this work he made many acquaintances and friends whom he appreciated. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lamoni and Crest City Masonic Lodge #522, AF & AM. His joy was in his home, his children, and the long loving marriage to his mate for 63 years.

Preceding him death were his wife; parents; and a sister and brother-in-law Lorene & Harold SUMPTION.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Nancy HUGHES and husband Lee of Overland Park, Kansas; son Stewart MAIN and wife Sherry of Grain Valley, Missouri; granddaughter Tanya CHESHIRE of Olathe, Kansas and children Eve, Lily Fe, and Cooper; granddaughter Nichole BUTLER of St. Louis, Missouri; niece Myrna ALDRICH & husband Steve; nephews Jeffrey & wife Elizabeth and David & wife Angela and their children Emma and Max of Minneapolis, Minnesota; other relatives and friends.

A Masonic service will begin at 3:00 pm. Memorials are to the Lamoni United Methodist Church.
