The party camped over night, where the United Presbyterian church is located. Mr. McFARLAND finally settled in Benton township. At the outbreak of the civil war, he enlisted as a member of Company G., 29th Iowa infantry and served from 1862 to the close of the war. When mustered out, he held the rank of second lieutenant. He returned to Ringgold county and in 1869 was elected county auditor, serving with great acceptability for three terms. Mr. McFARLAND's wife died in Mt. Ayr in 1874. They were the parents of twelve children of whom seven are yet living as follows: Samuel P. McFARLAND, of Creighton, Neb.; Rev. Wm. T. B. McFARLAND, of Diagonal; Lewis H. McFARLAND, of Benton; Mrs. Oraetta STEPHENSON of Clearfield; Mrs. Margaret E. SHIELDS of Rice township; David H. McFARLAND, of Plainview, Neb.; Sedoras B. McFARLAND With the exception of the last two named, the children were present at the funeral.

The funeral services were conducted Saturday forenoon at 10 o'clock from the M. E. church in Mt. Ayr, Rev. H. P. DUDLEY conducting. The pall bearers were six of Mr. McFARLAND's old comrades, Messrs. I. W. KELLER, Samuel H. KLING, G. S. MOORE, Wm. MILSAP, Capt. A. JOHNSTON and Elijah CAMPBELL. The interment was made in the Shay (Platte River) cemetery in Benton township.
