OBITUARY - MONROE McCLANAHAN.

Monroe Robentile McCLANAHAN was born in [Ripley of] Brown county, Ohio, March 7th, 1844, and died at Caldwell, Kan. [at the home of his son, Dr. William A. McCLANAHAN], December 3, 1923.

When eleven years old the family moved to Monmouth, Ill. In 1864 he volunteered as a soldier in the Civil war and served [in his brother William Steele McCLANAHAN's Company A as a Private in the 138th Illinois Infantry for 100 days] until the end of the war and then returned to Monmouth, Ill.

On September 19, 1865 [in Warren County, Illinois], he was married to Sarah Isabelle "Belle" STRUTHERS [in a double wedding ceremony with his brother, Francis Marion McCLANAHAN and Elizabeth S. FOSTER], and settled on a farm adjoining Alexis, Ill. In 1872, he moved to Ringgold county, Iowa, and improved a farm south of Mt. Ayr. Five children came to this union - three [daughters] dying in infancy. Two remain -- W. A., of Ringgold, Kan., and N. R. of Aberdeen, S. Dak.

Mrs. McCLANAHAN died November 20, 1893. On May 25, 1896 he married again to Mrs. Elizabeth McCREARY at Cedar Creek parsonage, Warren county, Illinois, by her pastor, Rev. Wm. DONALDSON. They lived most of the time in Warren county, Illinois, until her death which took place October 31, 1920. Since that time he has made his home with the two boys.

In early life he made a profession of religion and united with the U. P. church of Cedar Creek, Ill., and has always been an active member of the church. He was a charter member and an elder of the Alexis U. P. church and served as elder a number of years in the Mount Ayr U. P. church. At the time of his death he holds his membership in the West Side U. P. church of Monmouth, Ill.

Dr. and Mrs. W. A. McCLANAHAN, of Caldwell, Kan., at whose home Mr. McCLANAHAN spent the last months of his life, accompanied the remains to Mouth Ayr. They were joined at Tingley by N. R. McCLANAHAN of Aberdeen, S. D., and Rev. STEWART of Oskaloosa. Ed and John RANKIN and Rev. John CURRIE, of Tarkio, Mo., arrived yesterday morning to attend the funeral.

Funeral services were conducted at the Mount Ayr U. P. church Wednesday morning, December 5, at 10:30 by Rev. W. J. STEWART, of Oskaloosa, who was at one time pastor of the Redding church. [Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa.

NOTE: Monroe's brother Francis Marion McCLANAHAN was born July 13, 1839 in Brown County, Ohio, and died December 16, 1908. Francis' wife, Elizabeth S. (FOSTER) McCLANAHAN was born on August 28, 1846, and died September 11, 1934. They were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. Francis and Elizabeth were the parents of nine children: John A. (1866-1943), interment Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, IA; Effa Eutoka (McCLANAHAN) MEADOWS (1868-?); Jennie Wilson (1871-1874), interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa; Roy Clifford (1875-1959), interment Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, IA; Leona (McCLANAHAN) ROGERS (1872-?); Margaret Black (McCLANAHAN) HALDEMAN (1879-?); Francis Howard (1882-1965), interment Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, IA; Fern Adella (McCLANAHAN) FULLER (1886-?); and Mary Maud (McCLANAHAN) FULLER (1889-1937).

Dr. William McCLANAHAN, son of Monroe R. and Sarah Isabelle (STRUTHERS), was born on January 26, 1867, and married Emma J. THOMPSON (sister of Tarkio president). Emma died on December 19, 1932, Little Rock, Arkansas. No children were born to this marriage.

N. R. [Nelson Rankin] McCLANAHAN, son of Monroe R. and Sarah Isabelle (STRUTHERS), was born on September 16, 1877 in Mount Ayr, Iowa, and died on June 6, 1945, Aberdeen, South Dakota. N. R. owned and operated a general store and post office in Mina, South Dakota. He was married on December 21, 1904 in Mina, South Dakota to Ida Blanche LEWIS. Ida was born April 15, 1879, Dane County, Wisconsin, and died in Columbus, Ohio, on September 4, 1959. N. R. and Ida Blanche (LEWIS) McCLANAHAN were the parents of one daughter, Jeanne Isabel McCLANAHAN.

Jeanne Isabel McCLANAHAN, daughter of N. R. and Ida & granddaughter of Monroe R. and Sarah Isabelle McCLANAHAN, was born in Mina, South Dakota on April 15, 1906. She married Horace Archer MARTIN on September 27, 1931, Aberdeen, South Dakota. Jeanne died in Columbus, Ohio, on April 26, 1993. Horace Archer MARTIN was born July 28, 1906, Windmere, North Dakota, and died in Columbus, Ohio, on April 26, 1993. They were the parents of Lois Jeanne MARTIN, born November 1, 1932, Aberdeen, S.D., and married on December 28, 1952, Columbus, Ohio, to Lloyd Leo ERDMANN (1931-1976).

There are four McCLANAHAN infants interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. One infant died on July 1, 1873. Another died on May 9, 1875. It isn't known when the other two infants died. Nor is it know which ones of the interments are the children of Monroe R. and Sarah Isabelle (STRUTHERS) McCLANAHAN.
