OBITUARY - ISAAC P. MARTIN

Isaac P. MARTIN died at his home in Leon, Monday, May 30, of stomach trouble after a lingering illness. The funeral services were held from the house yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Geo. WINTERBOURNE. The funeral obsequies were in charge of the Odd Fellows.

Mr. MARTIN was a native of Indiana. At the early age of 16 years he enlisted in the Mexican War, in Company B, Fourth Indiana. He served until the close of the war and was in several bloody engagements. After the close of the war, he returned to his home and in 1853 he emigrated west, going to California. After spending some time on the Pacific slope, he returned and settled in Grundy County, Missouri. Here he was when the war of the Rebellion broke out. He at once took up arms in defense of the old flag he had followed in other battle grounds and enlisted in Company C, Twenty-third Missouri and was commissioned second lieutenant. In 1862 he was promoted to adjutant of the regiment.

He was severely wounded in the left leg at the battle of Shiloh. The wound was so serious that it disabled him from further military duty and he resigned and came home. He then moved to Decatur County and located on a farm in Eden Township, where he continued to reside until a few years ago when he moved to Leon and has since made this city his home. He was offered a colonel's commission if he would stay in the service, but knowing he was unable to perform the duties of the office, he felt it would be dishonorable to sap the foundation of the country and he rejected the offer.

He was prominent in the church and in public affairs, a thorough gentleman and one who was universally esteemed and loved for his many good qualities.

A large concourse of friends were present at the services and listened to an obituary, read by his brother, Rev. Wm. MARTIN, Pastor of the M.E. Church of Mount Ayr, and after a brief eulogy by Rev. WINTERBOURNE the body was taken to the cemetery and laid to rest.
