JOHN MATHENY, PIONEER, DIES

"GRAND OLD MAN OF PLATTEVILLE" WAS 92

John C[ollins] MATHENY, 92, “grand old man of Platteville,” died Wednesday at his home in that community, southeast of Bedford. He had been a resident of Taylor County for forty-nine years and, until his death, was the remaining Civil War veteran of the southeast section of the county.

MATHENY was well known and respected over the county. He was recognized as an apt student of political affairs and, although an aged man, his mind was active until his death. On his sickbed he discussed problems of the day.

MATHENY was born at Mineral Springs, O[hio], January 26, 1842. During the Civil War he was a member of the 70th Ohio Infantry. His wife was Mary Jane MADDOX.

He was the father of fourteen children, and nine survive him. They are J[osiah] H[arrison] MATHENY, A[lbert] L[ewis] MATHENY, W[illiam] W[ilson] MATHENY, M[arion] A[rthur] MATHENY and Mary Jane EWART of Blockton; D[aniel] C[uster] MATHENY of Conway; Myrta [Wilmina] CUBBAGE of Hope, Kans.; Nettie Mae WALTON of Delphos; and [Anna] Lettia (sic, should be Letitia) TEMPLETON of Ellston. There are thirty-three grandchildren and fifty-six great grandchildren.

A military funeral service was held this afternoon at the Platteville church, conducted by Rev. W. H. WARRIOR. Burial was made at Platteville under the direction of the Wetmore Funeral Home of Bedford.
