OBITUARY

WILLIAM DODGE

William Dodge was born in Hillsboro county, New Hampshire, May thirtieth, 1833, and died at his late home 1411 North Fair Oaks Avenue, Pasadena, Calif., January the ninth, 1914. Mr. Dodge was married to Mary E. Keller of Princeton, Ill., May 30th, 1860, and moved from Bureau county, Ill., to Poweshiek county, Iowa, in 1865. Here in Pleasant township he purchased 320 acres which he immediately improved and here he made his home continuously until 1892, when he moved with his family to Grinnell, engaging in the lumber business, which business he conducted successfully for several years. Later he decided to make his permanent home in California and sold all his interests in Grinnell.

Mr. Dodge was one of the best of the good citizens of Poweshiek county--a man of rarely good judgment and high ideals, esteemed and trusted by his neighbors. Much of the community affairs of a public nature were placed upon the shoulders of Mr. Dodge, and he executed such duties as faithfully and as carefully as he would attend to his private business. No person, whom Mr. Dodge considered deserving was ever refused help, when in his power to extend such help. He loved his family devotedly and he was always pleased to have them all around him. He purchased a lot for each of his children, near to his own home, in Pasadena and he looked forward, hopefully, to the time when he might have all his children near him.

Always energetic, always active, he, with the encouragement and help of a loving, frugal wife, accumulated considerable property, and for fourteen years this splendid couple enjoyed the fine climate of California. Mr. Dodge seemed in his usual health until within a few weeks of his death, when a severe stomach trouble came on, after which he failed rapidly. He is survived by the widow, Mary E. Dodge, Pasadena, Calif., his son, E.W. Dodge, Hubbard, Iowa, his daughters, Mrs. Ida E. Harris, and Mrs. Della M. Corrough, both of Grinnell, Iowa, and his son, Worth W. Dodge, of Los Angeles, California.

The Herald is in receipt of a copy of the Pasadena Daily News, which has the following comment on the death of Mr. Dodge:

"Funeral of William Dodge of 1411 North Fair Oaks avenue was held this afternoon form the chapel of Ives & Warren. Mr. Dodge was one of the best known and wealthiest residents of the northside where he had lived for fourteen years. Shortly after his return from a trip through the East several months ago Mr. Dodge became seriously ill. While he rallied on several occasions and showed signs of improvement, it proved to be a fatal sickness and he died last Saturday afternoon. Mr. Dodge was 80 years of age and previous to coming to Pasadena had lived in Grinnell, Iowa. He owned several large farms in Iowa and Minnesota and had other extensive business interests in the middle west. Mr. Dodge was one of the principal stockholders and vice president of the State Bank of Pasadena."
