MRS. CHARLOTTE
BODEN OF KELLOGG
PASSES AWAY

Kellogg, Ia., Jan. 4, Special:

Mrs. Charlotte Boden, 89, widow of the Rev.F.A. Boden, First Lutheran minister of the Kellogg and Elk Creek Lutheran churches, died at her home Friday of last week at 3:10 following a lingering illness. Her husband, the late F.A. Boden, organized the church here in 1870 and three years later the family came here and located permanently. Before coming here Rev. Mr. Boden had lived in Malcom for five years and from this point had served groups of Lutherans at Monroe, Elk Creek, Wildcat Grove and Kellogg.

Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church here Monday afternoon at 1:30 following a brief prayer service at the home, with Rev. W.G. Weber, the local pastor, in charge. Music was furnished by a quartet which included Rev. A. Thalacker of Malcom, Rev. A.H. Schultz of State Center, Rev. Mr. Biedermann and Rev. Mr. Zellinger of Des Moines who sang "Nearer My God to Thee," "Jesus Lover Of My Soul: and "Abide With Me" with organ accompaniment by Mrs. George Redding.

Ministers also served as pallbearers and included Rev. Mr. Thalacker of Malcom, Rev. Mr. A.H. Schultz of State Center, Rev. Mr. Niederwimmer of Grinnell, Rev. Mr. Ganschow, Rev. Mr. Biedermann and Rev. Mr. Zellinger, all of Des Moines.

Burial was made in the family lot in the Lutheran cemetery west of town.

Wilhelmine Sophie Charlotte Kordes was born at Isenstatt, Westphalia, Germany, December 19, 1845. She attended the parochial school of the village in childhood and was confirmed at the age of 14 years. With her mother and two brothers she came to the United States in 1868 locating at Wilton, Iowa, among relatives.

She was united in marriage to Rev. Mr. F.A. Boden on March 17th, 1870, at Wilton and they went at once to Malcom to make their home where Mr. Boden was pastor of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church. Three years later they moved to Kellogg because of its central location and where she lived until the time of her death.

Rev. Mr. Boden established this church in 1870 and it was at that time the present building was erected.

Seven children were born to them, three of whom survive, three sons and a daughter having preceded her in death.

Rev. Mr. Boden died in 1897 after 25 years' service as pastor of the church here.

Mrs. Boden cheerfully endured all the trials and hardships of the work of the early churches and was always patient and kind.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Miss Anna at home and Mrs. S.G. Wilson of Des Moines and a son, Oscar G. Boden of Nyssa, Oregon; a brother, G.F. Mahler of San Diego, California; and three grandchildren, Ralph, Dorothy and Marion Boden of Nyssa, Oregon.
