Obituary dated May 1, 1914

SAMUEL MEEK BROWN

Samuel Meek Brown was born Feb. 26, 1838, in Guernsey Co., Ohio, and departed this life April 18, 1914, in Ames, Iowa, aged seventy-six years, one month and twenty days.

In November, 1861, he was united in marriage to Victoria Merryman, whose death occurred in 1867, leaving one daughter, Mrs. Arminda Emery, of Ames, Iowa.

In 1869 he came to Iowa, bought a farm in Poweshiek County, near Victor. In 1872 he returned to Ohio where, on March 7th, he was married to Sarah Jane McBurney of Guernsey county, returning immediately after his marriage to his Iowa farm where he lived for over a quarter of a century.

There came to bless this union, five children, four sons and one daughter, as follows:

James Orris, Laporte, Ind.; Willis Everett, Grinnell, Iowa; Ura McBurney, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Vera Idella Noyes of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Ray Talmage of Nevada, Iowa.

These, with the mother, one brother, J.W. Brown, of Ohio, and nine grandchildren, survive to cherish the memory of a kind and affectionate father, a dutiful and devoted husband and a loving brother.

In 1894 he sold his farm and moved to Brooklyn. In 1897 he moved to Grinnell; here he lived until last September, when he moved to Ames.

Mr. Brown became a member of the M.E. church thirty-seven years ago at Victor, remaining a consistent member of the church to the end of his life. Quiet and reserved in his habits he set an example of religious life which won the love and respect of many loyal friends.

His death was caused by complications of ailments which wasted his strength until worn out, he entered into that rest which knows no ending.

His funeral services were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. H.E. Emery, on Monday, April 20th, at ten o'clock; interment was at Nevada cemetery.
