DARRELL W. ROJOHN SR., 80

Darrell W. Rojohn Sr., 80, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at University Hospitals in Iowa City of a heart ailment.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 16, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Kathryn Roys, pastor of the church, officiating. A private family graveside service will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to PALS, St. John's Lutheran Church, or to the American Heart Association.

Darrell was born on May 26, 1928, in Colfax. He was raised in Newton and graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1946. In November of 1950, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict. Following his service in the Army, he returned to Newton and became employed at the Maytag Company. He served over 42 years with Maytag and retired as a supervisor in the product distribution department.

Darrell was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell, the VFW of Malcom, the Elks Lodge of Grinnell, and the Grinnell Tiger Booster Club. He was a Little League and Babe Ruth baseball coach, and an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and pet dogs, as well as fishing in Minnesota. Darrell gave the gift of life by donating some of his vital organs.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Rojohn of Grinnell; his children, Lynette (Jeff Wagner) Webster, Andrea Rojohn, and Jake (Kristi) Rojohn, all of West Des Moines; Ann (Alan) Knaack, and Darrell Rojohn Jr., both of Grinnell, and Liz Rojohn of Texas; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, David (Louise) Rojohn of Newton; and one sister, ErmaLee DeMoss of Prairie City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Inez Rojohn; and one son, Curtis.
