OBITUARY.
John Porter was born in northern Ireland, of Scotch-Irish ancestry, in 1828. He came to America when eighteen years old and was married at Trenton, N.J., in, 1855, to Isabella Draper, who survives him. He became a resident of Scott county, Iowa, in 1855 and of Grinnell in 1874. Five of his nine children still live, J .F. Porter, Orin M. Porter, Mrs. William H. McKane and Mrs. Forrest Raisor, in Grinnell, and Bion H. Porter, at Wayne, Nebraska. Most of his life has been devoted to farming, interrupted only by service in the civil war during its last year. He enjoyed good health until his later years, and gathered about himself the comfortable rewards of honest, patient industry. He has left a reputation honored for integrity and a memory very dear to those who came in closest contact with him.
His death occurred on the 31st ult. and the funeral services were held on the 2nd instant, at which Professor L.F. Parker officiated. The Gordon Granger Post attended the services in a body, and, at his request, were asked to take charge of the closing exercises in the cemetery.
