Info on Alfred R & Lavinia T Goldsmith

I have found that my ancestor Lavinia Thomas Phillips married Alfred R Goldsmith, July 1899 Des Moines. Alfred is in the 1897 directory as a cook. Census records show they lived in Polk, Des Moines - from 1925 on West 10th Street. They still lived there in 1940, both died in 1945.In 1908 they visited England as visitors, Lavinia and her daughter are listed as 'black'. They were one of 2 families living in a predominantly black area - any connections? Or any other info on this family.
