you might try the polk county web site at http://info.gov look for the polk county recorder's listing and check for the Crocker Township map. (that one covers almost all of Ankeny's area at that time era you need). The other map is the Saylor Township map which covers all of the land south of Ankeny. (My ancestor's land was much of Saylor Township). I just took a look at my family photos, and I think the Howard you are looking for was Joseph Perry Howard. he owned a large farm in that time, he inherited it from another Howard family. The farm was in the southwest corner of Ankeny. he lived from 1847 to 1925. I hope that this will give you some help. The phone for the Polk county Recorders office is 1-515-286-3160.
