Note: I will fill in some of the information left out of Charles David Eberhard’s obituaries. Charles was married two times. His first wife was Wilhelmina “Minnie” Erhardt. He married her in 1894 in Plymouth County, Iowa. They had eight children together. One daughter Lucele died at age eight in 1909 before her mother. His first wife died in 1918 and was survived by seven children. Harold, Walter, Ruth, David, Rudolph, Willard and Eldon.

Charles married a second time to a woman named Meta Leibold. He married her in 1920 in Sioux City, Ia.. Meta Leibold who was a divorced woman. Her first husband was named Henry Leibold. She came into the marriage with two daughters by the names of Clara and Leona. Meta’s maiden name was Pickeron. I can’t find out if he adopted her two daughters but they used his last name of Eberhard as their maiden name. Charles and Meta had three children of their own. One son Robert and two daughters Elenor and Evelyn.

CHAS, EBERHARD DIES AT SIOUX CITY

Succumbs At Hospital At Advanced Age of 82 Years

Charles David Eberhard, for many years a resident of Plymouth county died in St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City Sept. 21 at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 4 days.

The funeral was held this afternoon at Maurer’s chapel, and at 2 o’clock services were in the Hildreth memorial church with Rev. G. O. Thompson conducting the services and Dr. B. F. Zuehl preaching the sermon. Interment was in the Le Mars cemetery.

Surviving are his widow, 7 sons, 3 daughters, 2 step-daughters, 24 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: three brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Eberhard spent most of his life in Plymouth county. He came here with his parents at the age of 7 years, and spent 75 years in Plymouth county. He has been a resident of Sioux City only a short time.

Galena, Ill., was Mr. Eberhard’s birthplace and May 17, 1861, was the date.

Charles Eberhard Liberty Pioneer Resident Dies

Lived in Plymouth For More Than Seventy-Five Years

Charles D. Eberhard, resident of Plymouth county for seventy-five years, died Tuesday morning at St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City.

He is survived by his wife of Sioux City, seven sons Harold Mitchell, S. D.; Walter and Carl Sioux City; Elson, Richmond, Cal. And Robert Moville; five daughters, Mrs. Elmer Wetrosky, Akron; Lorene, LeMars; Evelyn Sioux City; Mrs. D. Raybe, Moville and Mrs. T. Lottridge Los Angeles; twenty-five grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Charles D. Eberhard was born at Galena, Ill., May 17, 1861, a son of Mr. and Mrs. David Eberhard who came to Plymouth county in 1868 and preempted land in Liberty township paying $1.25 per acre and homesteaded eighty acres of land. Charles Eberhard received his education in the old sod school house near his father’s homestead. When a youth of went to California where he lived nine years. Returning to this county he farmed with a brother on the home place and then bought the farm. Mr. Eberhard farmed successfully for many years until he suffered losses during the depression.

While living in Liberty township he was identified with politics and was a leading republican. He served as township clerk and on the school board for a number of years.

The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at Hildreth Memorial church, Rev. G. O. Thompson officiating. The Mauer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
