Note: Her maiden name is Kalas in Kaelke as in the newspaper. Her mother's maiden name is Erhardt.
Mrs. Emma Kaelke daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Kaelke was born Feb. 13, 1876 at Guttenburg, Ia., and departed this life at the age of 63 years and 10 days at Le mars, Ia.
Mrs. Kaelke, with the exception of a few years, was a lifelong resident of Plymouth county, having moved with her parents to a homestead west of Le Mars when a small child. In 1903 she was united in marriage to Herman Kaelke and to this union six children were born, all of whom survive, except one son, Newton, who preceded her in death, March 14, 1937.
She was converted early in life and united with the Evangelical church of which she was a member until she united with the Free Methodist church in the year 1910. She lived a consistent and happy Christian life both in the home and the community where she lived. Mrs. Kaelke was a friend of the shut-ins of her community, visiting them and ministering to their needs. Her place in church was never vacant unless she was too sick to attend.
Her death came as the result of a fractured hip which she received in a fall while on the way to visit one of her shut-in friends. She died triumphant in the faith, leaving a clear testimony that she was leaning upon the solid rock, Christ Jesus. She has left to her children a goodly heritage.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Herman Kaelke; five children, Elna., of Shenandoah; Wallace of Sioux City; Mrs. Leona Hawnes of Thurman, Ia.; Esther and Ferne who remain at home, and also one grandchild. Two sisters and three brothers also remain, Mrs. Ella Wetzel and Mrs. Sam Zimmerman of LeMars, John Kalas of Sioux City, Otto of Merrill and Will of Glendale, Ariz., also a host of many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held from Mauer’s funeral home and at the Free Methodist church with Rev. E. N. Garvin officiating, assisted by Rev. A. W. Irwin.
Rev. and Mrs. Alhaman sang “No Disappointment in Heaven”, “Close to Thee”, and “The House Over There,” was sung at the graveside in the city cemetery.
