MRS. EMIL JOHNSON CALLED BY DEATH FRIDAY MORNING
Last Rites Are Held Monday or Esteemed Akron Resident
One of this community’s well-known and revered residents, Mrs. Emil Johnson, passed away Friday morning, January 27, at the Akron Nursing Home, after a brief illness, aged 82 years, 2 months and 27 days.
Hulda Josephine Peterson was born in Odegaard, Nittorp Foranmilgen, Alfaborg Lan, Vastergotland, Sweden, October 31, 1884. Baptized in infancy, she was later confirmed in the Lutheran Church of Sweden. In 1906, at the age of fifteen, she came to America with her sister, Anna, who that year was married to Peter Johnson.
On February 4, 1904, she was united in marriage with G. Emil Johnson the ceremony taking place in the Peter Johnson home here and Pastor Olof Wallin, of Union Creek Lutheran church, officiating.
They engaged in farming in this vicinity until they moved to Akron in the fall of 1954, and this has since remained their home. Mr. ND Mrs. Johnson remained members of Union Creek Lutheran church u ntil September, 1910, when they, with twenty-five others, became charter members of the newly-organized Immanuel Lutheran church here.
Mrs. Johnson was not only an active, participating member of her church but also of its various organizations, serving as President both of Immanuel Ladies Aid and of Immanuel Women’s Missionary Society. She served as a District officer of the W.M.S.; was a teacher in the Sunday school and during recent years was active in the Adult Class. Her home was always open to meetings of the Immanuel choir and of the Luther League. Students who served Immanuel on Sunday mornings frequently enjoyed the warm hospitality of the Johnson home. In fact folks of every age—children, youth and adults—knew and responded to the unceasing welcome and sociability and festive board extended. In a special sense the friendliness and conviviality there made every guest feel right at home.
Left to mourn her departure are: Her husband Emil; three sons, Clifford of Sheldon, Iowa; Arden NAD Roger both of Akron; two daughters, Lois Decker of Chicago, and Phyllis Decker of Akron; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Lee Peterson of Kadoka, S. D., and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in Immanuel Lutheran church, Pastor David J. Roy officiating. Mrs. Stuart Harris, Mrs. Kenneth Peters and Mrs. Arnold Clark comprised a vocal trio. Mrs. Henning Shoulberg was organist. Casket bearers were Fred Claesson, Jr., Ivan Finzen, Milton Anderson, Arvin Finzen, Stanley Anderson and Russell Anderson. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
