OBITUARY

Mr. Emil Johnson departed this life last Tuesday evening, June 3, 1969, at the Akron Hospital. He was 95 years of age.

Gustave Emil Johnson was born in Lund Mossebo Elfaborg Lan, Vastergottland, Sweden, August 31, 1873. During infancy he was baptized in the church at Mossebo and as a youth was confirmed in the church at Tranemo.

It was early in 1896 that he as a young man of 22 came to America to Plymouth County, Iowa. He worked for his brothers on farms east of Akron for a number of years.

On February 24, 1904, at a marriage service in the Peter Johnson home here at Akron he was united in marriage to Miss Hulda Peterson. Pastor Olof Wallin, of Union Creek Church, officiated.

From then until the fall of 1954, when they moved to Akron, they lived on farms near Akron in both Plymouth and Union Counties. Mr. Johnson has lived in the Akron Nursing Home since the fall of 1963 and testified frequently to the fine accommodations he was accorded there.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were members of Union Creek Lutheran Church until September 30, 1910, when they with twenty-five others became charter members of the newly-organized Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Mr. Johnson was one of five men who made a down payment of $1,000 for the site of Immanuel Church at the corner of Third and Main Streets in Akron. This is the present site.

Mr. Johnson was an active, participating member of his church as long as he was able. He served on the church board in whatever way he could during days when the congregation was small and sometimes struggling. He was active as a devoted member of the church choir. His interest in Immanuel and support of it never slackened.

Mr. Johnson was deeply concerned about personal piety. He did not hesitate to make known his deep gratitude to God for the Savior’s love. He believed that God had been marvelously good to him in permitting him to be a child of God. He was quick to show love and friendliness to those whom he met. As a result many knew him for what admirable quality of character.

Those who remain to mourn his departure are; his three sons, Clifford, of Sheldon, Iowa, Arden and Roger, both of Akron; his two daughters, Mrs. Lois Decker, of Chicago, and Mrs. Phyllis Frisk, of Akron; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, beside other relatives and friends. Those who preceded him death include; his wife in January, 1967 and a granddaughter, Joyce Johnson.

Peace be to the memory of Gustav Emil Johnson.

Funeral services were held at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Friday afternoon of last week with Rev. David J. Roy officiating. Music consisted of a selection by the Immanuel Ladies Chorus and a congregational hymn, with Mrs. Henning Shoulberg as organist. Casket bearers were Ivan Finzen, Milton Anderson, Arvin Finzen, Russell Anderson, Fred Claesson, Jr. and Henry Anderson. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.
