OTO, Iowa -- Paul T. O'Connell, 93, of Oto died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto with the Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial will be in St Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Oto. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m. at the church in Oto. The Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. O'Connell was born April 15, 1905, to Jeffrey and Emma (Eisenminger) O'Connell on a farm east of Anthon, Iowa. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Anthon.

He farmed and barbered for a few years. In 1933, he became a beer distributor in Ida Grove, Iowa.

On May 15, 1939, he married Bernice Dixon in Anthon. The couple operated a tavern in Battle Creek, Iowa, for a few years. In 1942 they moved to a farm south of Oto. In 1943, he bought and operated the Anthon Pool Hall for around five years. In 1950 he returned to his farm and operated it until 1971 when they moved into Oto. His wife died Dec. 25,1995.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Joe and Doris of Smithland, Iowa; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and an infant sister.
