Howard T. Gullion, 86, of Norwalk, formerly of Knoxville and Columbia area, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 5, 2009 in Des Moines.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2009, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 9, 2009, also at Williams Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Olive Chapel Cemetery in rural Columbia.

Howard was born on November 20, 1922 at home in rural Columbia, to Guy Curtis and Pearl Mae (Hibbits) Gullion. He grew up in the Columbia area and attended school there as well.

Howard farmed for several years before enlisting into the U.S. Army where he served for 3 years in Texas. Upon his discharge, he returned to the Columbia and Knoxville area.

On October 31, 1953, he married his long time love Shirley Heaton at the Church of the Nazarene in Knoxville.

Howard worked at Maytag for 30 years retiring on September 30, 1983. He also was a part time minister and evangelist. He would fill in for small church in the area like Melcher–Dallas and also in Harvey.

He loved to write poetry, go fishing, and hunting with his coon dogs. Howard also enjoyed gardening and going to the farmer’s market. Howard was a godly man who believed in prayer and reading the Bible. He loved to visit and meet with people, he never knew a stranger.

Howard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Gullion of Norwalk, IA; children, Carol (Buddy) Leonard of Des Moines, IA; Cathy (Dan) Durham of Pella, IA; Beth Gullion of Oskaloosa, IA; and Steve (Kelly) Gullion of Norwalk, IA; 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, 2 brothers and 4 sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers. Memorials may be made to the Howard Gullion Family.
