Shives, Dorothy A. (Bowers) 1918-2009

Dorothy Alice Shives was born April 30, 1918 in Prairie City, Iowa, the daughter of Richmond Bowers and Martha (Booth) Bowers.

Following graduation from Beech High School in 1937, Dorothy moved to Pleasantville where she resided until 1939 when she was united in marriage to Harry Vernon Shives on February 14, 1939 in Chariton. The two eventually moved their family to a farm south of Knoxville in 1962 until moving into Knoxville in 1973.

Over the years she worked at Collins Hospital as a nurse’s aide, Super Value as a bakery manager and was also a wonderful farm wife.

Dorothy was very talented with crocheting, quilting and needlework, leaving many beautiful quilts and afghans for her family. She kept an extensive family history and enjoyed scrapbooking her many photos and articles.

She passed away on Friday, October 23, 2009 at Griffin Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 23 days.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings, Veda Wheeldon, R. Vernon Bowers, a baby sister, Lois Bingaman/Akers, Clara Briggs and R. Forrest Bowers.

Those left to honor her memory are her children, Ronald (Wilma) Shives of Knoxville, Kenneth (Barb) Shives of Pella, Karen (Ron) Jones of Knoxville, Harry Shives, Jr. (Alice) of Monroe, Roy (Pam) Shives of Bloomington, MN, Garry (Linda) Shives of Newton, Cheryl (James) Gale of Aurora, CO; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren.

Burial: Graceland Cemetery, Knoxville, IA
