Shirley Jean Wallace was born on June 29, 1935 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of John Carton and Blanche (Wahl) Carton.

She was united in marriage to Gary Lee Wallace on May 3, 1954 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Des Moines, to this union five children were born.

Shirley worked at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines for 27 years and also on the family farm for 49 years. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Her greatest love in life was her family. She enjoyed morning coffee times with her family, a good card game and playing yahtzee. Holidays were a special time and all the family will cherish those memories. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, daughter-in-law and friend that her family and friends will forever cherish and never forget.

Shirley passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 14 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, John Carton, brother-in-law, Phil Schmitz, and her father-in-law, Edwin Wallace.

Shirley is survived by her husband of fifty-five years, Gary L. Wallace; children, Gary E. Wallace, Tammy Bonnett (Rex), Stephanie Fehrer (Justin), Beth Boza (Curt) all of Pleasantville, Michael Wallace (Teresa) of Augusta, KS; 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; sister, Edna Schmitz of Hernando, FL; brother, Willis Carton (Ann) of Salt Lake, UT; mother-in-law, Lela Wallace of Melcher-Dallas along with other relatives and many friends.
