Betty Jane Carpenter was born July 16, 1918 in Knoxville, Iowa the daughter of Roy and Callie (Ream) Carpenter.

She graduated from Knoxville High School in 1936.

On July 16, 1939 she was united in marriage to Lionel Lee Bybee. To this union three children were born: Larry, Kim and Rosemary.

Betty worked as a secretary at the State Health Department, in Des Moines, during WWII. She later worked at USF&G Insurance in Des Moines and Bill Schmidt Ins. in Pleasantville. Betty became Pleasantville City Clerk in 1970 and served in that position until she retired in 1983.

She was appointed by Gov. Robert D. Ray and later re-appointed by Gov. Terry Branstad to serve on the City Finance Committee representing small towns of Iowa during her tenure with the City of Pleasantville.

Betty was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, the U.M.W., the American Legion Auxiliary, the Pleasantville Lioness Club and the Order of Eastern Star.

Betty loved her family. Her mother, Callie; her father, Roy; brother, Jack and numerous aunts, uncles and cousin were the strength and foundation of her early life. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Betty passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Pleasant Care Center at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 11 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lionel and two brothers, Jack and Marion Carpenter.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Larry Bybee (Barb) of Pleasantville, Rosemary Marsh (Bob) of Manchester and Kim Bybee of Swan; five grandchildren: Mathew (Jodi) Bybee of Ankeny; Joanna (Jay) Morrison of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; Angela (Todd) Sleep of Dubuque, Iowa; Laura (Rick) Hecker of Rochester, MN and Michael Marsh of Chicago, IL and seven great-grandchildren.

Burial: Graceland Cemetery, Knoxville, IA
