Anthony David Bockenstedt, Sr. was born August 13, 1948 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Henry Raymond Bockenstedt and Mary Lou (Bob) Short.

Dave grew up in Luxemburg and moved to Guttenberg at the age of 10. Following graduation from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1966, Dave served in the Navy, attended the Iowa Automotive & Diesel Institute in Cedar Rapids, and later attended Ironworkers Journeyman School in Des Moines, earning degrees as a diesel mechanic and a certified Journeyman.

During his military service from 1966 to 1969 he completed boot camp in San Diego, CA and was called to duty on a guided missile destroyer.

Over the years, Dave worked for the Indianola school system followed by a career with U.S. General Services Administration for the last 18 years. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5038 in Ankeny.

Dave was united in marriage to Kristy Sue Maitre on November 21, 1970 in Guttenberg, the two were later divorced. On February 6, 1994, Dave was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Hopkins Olson in Ankeny.

He was an avid golfer, loved to cook and play his guitar, and enjoyed gambling at Prairie Meadows with his mother, Mary. Dave also enjoyed reading, some of his favorites included Battlefield Earth and the Hobbit series. He also enjoyed gardening, dancing, bowling, camping, fishing, grilling, eating M&M’s, working on cars and experimenting with his jerry-rigging abilities.

Dave passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 60.

He was preceded in death by his father and infant brothers, Steven and Billy Joe Bockenstedt.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Sarah; children, Dawn (Chris) Fee of Knoxville, Anthony David (Sarah) Bockenstedt, Jr. of Johnston, Lance (Danni Mitchell) Bockenstedt of Des Moines; step-children, Eric (Carla) Olson of Poulsbo, Washington, Maria (Ryan) Trogdon of Ankeny; grandchildren, Jessica and John Fee, Katilyn and Cole Bockenstedt, Sam Lenihan; mother, Mary Lou (Bob) Short of Des Moines; brothers, Randy (Becky) Bockenstedt of Fredericksburg, WV, Mark (Wendy) Bockenstedt of Polk City, Russell Bockenstedt of Elkader; sisters, Sandy (John) Mathias of Chariton, Brenda (Ron) Tart of Pleasant Hill, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
