Sweem, Mary Cecilia Hughes – 1874-1949

Mary Cecilia, youngest daughter of Richard and Marguerite Hughes, was born November 5, 1874 near Oskaloosa and died June 21, 1949 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Icle Ellis in Knoxville. She had been ill for the past two months.
The deceased was united in marriage in 1897 to Frank Sweem of Tracy and to this union one daughter, Mrs. Ellis, was born. Mrs. Sweem was also a devoted mother to a stepson, Jesse, who lived at home until he reached maturity.
Mr. Sweem preceded his wife in death, January 20, 1940. Her parents, brothers and sisters also preceded her in death.
Mr. and Mrs. Sweem made their home with the son-in-law and daughter for many years. Mrs. Sweem cared for their daughter, Evelyn, while the parents were employed.
Mrs. Sweem was a life-long member of the Catholic church.
Survivors include the son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Ellis, of Knoxville, the stepson, Jesse Sweem of Glendale, Calif., a step-daughter, Mrs. Mable McNab of Gilman, Ill.; six grandchildren, Evelyn Marsh, of Knoxville, Jack and Darwin Sweem of Glendale, Calif., Robert McGruder, who is serving overseas with the army; Marie and Geraldine McNab, of Gilman, Ill.; five great-grandchildren.
Requiem high mass will be held from St. Anthony’s Catholic church this (Thursday) forenoon at 9:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Father Paul A. Albers. Interment will be made in the Bellefountaine cemetery near Tracy.
